New engine for Mercedes AMG Petronas

Mercedes AMG Petronas developed a new engine for 2014 season. This will be a 1.6 l V6 turbocharged engine and will replace the old 2.4 V8 normally aspired engine. Because of the turbocharger turbine the revs are limited to 15,000 rpm compared with the old V8 engine, where crankshaft is rotating at 18,000 rpm.The new V6 engine will have around 750 horsepower, 600 horsepower developed by the turbocharged engine and 150 are coming from Energy Recovery System (ERS) with two electric motors or Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

So how this work? When you start braking the rear wheels whill generate energy which goes through the driveshaft into this electric motor which charges up the battery and the second electric motor works as a generator recovering electrical energy from exhaust gasses via the turbocharger’s turbine and storing this in the same battery so when you need that extra power you can press a button releases that energy and gives you that power.
Mercedes Benz AMG Petronas released a video with the recording of this new engine, tested at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains facility in Brixworth, United Kingdom.
